Ellen & Joe Checota Powerhouse Theater
Family, Hope And A Rhythm All Their Own

From Tony Award–winning playwright Matthew López comes Somewhere, a tender and riveting portrait of a tight-knit Puerto Rican family in 1959 New York City. Set against the excitement and energy of Broadway’s West Side Story, the Candelaria siblings chase their dreams of dancing on stage, buoyed by their mother’s love and infectious enthusiasm. When their building is slated for demolition to make way for Lincoln Center, the family must navigate heartbreak, hope, and the unshakable bonds that hold them together. Bursting with music, dance, humor, and heart, this joyous, moving story is a celebration of family, resilience, and the American Dream.

“Richly written and emotionally resonant… López captures the ache of memory and the hope of reinvention.” — The New York Times

From the Tony Award-winning writer of The Inheritance and The Legend of Georgia McBride, seen at Milwaukee Rep in 2020,  comes a music and dance-filled portrait of a tight-knit Puerto Rican family striving to make it in show business

It’s 1959 in New York and the new musical West Side Story is the latest hit on Broadway. In a small apartment in the Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, the Candelarias, a close-knit Puerto Rican-American family, dream of careers in show business.

At the center of the story is Alejandro, the eldest son, who has set aside his own artistic ambitions to help support the family. Meanwhile, the family’s matriarch, Inez, fiercely encourages her children to pursue performing, believing in art as both escape and survival.

Their dreams seem within reach when opportunities arise to audition for the film version of West Side Story. But a sudden notice announcing a neighborhood-wide eviction threatens to destroy their home and the passions that have sustained their American Dream. Dance, family bonds, and unextinguishable hope take center stage in Somewhere.
