Education & Community Engagement

To create a positive impact, we recognize that theater has the power to create bridges between disparate communities, bring us together to examine varying worldviews, and discover creative ways in which programming can address community needs.

Our new Mpact initiative combines our current engagement and education programs with new programs designed to foster authentic relationships with communities of color, provide meaningful opportunities for civic discourse, and demonstrate that regional theaters have both the privilege and responsibility to be strong and active citizens.

Each season, nearly 20,000 students representing 250 area schools are involved in one of our education programs:

Reading Residencies

Milwaukee Rep In Class School Residencies

Reading Residencies teach middle and high school students throughout Milwaukee critical reading comprehension skills and social emotional skills such as empathy and communication. Curricula are uniquely designed around Rep productions and align with state Common Core standards. Additionally, each residency includes in-class workshops with Rep actors and attendance at a Rep Immersion Day, a full-day experiential learning program that includes demonstrations from our technical, artistic, and production staff.

Teen Programs

Milwaukee Rep Teen Council Program

Developed by teens for teens, Teen Council promotes an appreciation of theater for a younger generation and brings together diverse teens from all over southeastern Wisconsin. Students fully plan, organize, and participate in events and learn the administrative side of running a large professional theater.

Emerging Professional Resident Program

We have supported one of regional theater’s most highly-respected professional residency programs for more than 50 years to develop the next generation of American theater artists. Each season, The Rep welcomes emerging actors, directors, stage managers and technicians who gain valuable experience learning from experts in their fields. The Rep’s residency program serves as an entry into professional theater and a chance to spend a season working hands-on in one of America’s foremost regional theaters.

Community Conversation at Milwaukee Rep

Modeled on our successful Act II following every performance of our world premiere of American Song, we host small, facilitated discussions following our productions. These discussions allow patrons to interact with diverse viewpoints and dialogue about the pressing issues facing our community.
