General Operations

Milwaukee Repertory Theater has been a leading creative force in Milwaukee for more than 60 years, serving as a catalyst for civic dialogue and action. Through new works, compelling dramas, and breathtaking musicals, we demonstrate how a theater can represent a broad spectrum of viewpoints and challenge patrons to extend the breadth of their theatrical experiences. By producing theater of the highest quality, coupled with programming that expands each production beyond our walls, The Rep exercises the enduring power of theater to heal, teach, and empower.

But we need your help to do this.

Tickets only cover 50% of what it takes to create our work each season. The rest comes from generous donors like you who recognize our importance in the community and are committed to our success.

Check out the ways you can make an impact:
$6,000 – Support two classrooms to participate in our in-school Reading Residency program
$2,500 - Provide housing and travel for a playwright during one week of rehearsal
$1,000 – Employ an actor for a week of performances
$500 – Create five hand-made wigs from start to finish
$250 - Provide a monthly stipend for one Emerging Professional Resident
$100 – Purchase a 5-gallon bucket of wood glue that will be used to build almost half our productions
$50 – Provide one bus pass for a Youth Leader in our After School Program to attend meetings at The Rep.
$25 – Cover the stipend for one facilitator during Act II discussions
$10 – Support one student to attend their first live theater experience

Education/Community Engagement

We recognize that theater has the power to create bridges between disparate communities and discover creative ways in which programming can address community needs.

Our innovative Mpact initiative combines our current education and engagement programs to provide meaningful opportunities for civic discourse and demonstrate that regional theaters have both the privilege and responsibility to be strong and active citizens.

Rep Education impacts more than 21,000 students from more than 250 schools every season, using the power of theater to increase literacy skills, develop social emotional skills, and instill a life-long appreciation for live theater. This is accomplished through Reading Residencies, a unique After School Program, Rep Immersion Days, and student workshops.

Teens are able to gain leadership experience and connect with other youth who are passionate about theater through our Teen Council, becoming the next generation of theater artists and civic leaders.

New Play Development

We have long recognized that new work is the best vehicle to capture and examine the current zeitgeist. Since 1958, we have produced more than 150 world premiere productions on our stages. As such, the Rep created the John (Jack) D. Lewis New Play Development Program, named in honor of past Milwaukee Rep Board member John D. Lewis for his passionate belief in the transformational power of the theater.  Our goal is to produce new works – both commissioned by The Rep and works by emerging playwrights that have not yet been produced – that appeal to modern audiences and have the potential to transfer to cities across the nation, reinforcing The Rep as a leader in new play development.

You can’t have a titanic classic, you can’t have a groundbreaking work that pushes society forward, and you certainly can’t have a well-loved favorite—unless you have a new play first.

Artistic Training

We take the necessary steps to mentor and train the most talented emerging artists to grow the pool of local talent that calls Milwaukee home. Building off other local training programs that teach the necessary practical skills, we take students on the next phase of their professional journey by providing a real-world application of the skills they have learned and teaching students how to pursue a successful career as professional artists.

The Professional Training Institute (PTI) selects 16 of Milwaukee’s top high school actors to receive eight months of free masterclass training, culminating in a summer performance where the students are employed as actors. This program prepares students to enter the country’s most rigorous collegiate theater training programs.

Continuing the journey is our Emerging Professional Resident (EPR) program, which bridges the gap between academic training and professional practice. Each year, 20 of the nation’s top emerging actors, directors, stage managers and production artisans (including former PTI students) spend a full season at The Rep training exclusively within their field. More than 90% of EPRs find gainful employment in their fields, and many remain in Milwaukee to pursue their careers.
