Teen Council

Teen Council

The Rep’s Teen Council is an organization for teens, by teens that works to engage youth from all over Milwaukee with the art on Rep stages. In addition to planning a variety of student-driven events, Council members also have VIP access to The Rep, including access to $10 tickets to Rep productions and meet-and-greets with artists!

As an ensemble, Council members envision and plan a variety of events to engage a diverse population of young adults from all over the greater Milwaukee area. These opportunities encompass and develop skills related but not limited to:

  • Theater Appreciation and Advocacy
  • College & Career Readiness
  • Community Engagement & Volunteerism

Teen Council has two levels of membership in which students can participate: General and Leadership. Both levels of membership are completely free and allow students to help plan and attend events at The Rep and in the community.

Leadership Board Membership

Once a General Member, students can apply to be on the Leadership Board. The Leadership Board consists of 20 students who demonstrate consistent commitment to the Council. Seasonal officers will be elected by the Council to lead the Board. Benefits include:

  • Serving in a leadership role as a teen representative of The Rep
  • Opportunities to develop and apply understanding of arts administration in a professional setting.
  • Opportunities to receive assistance with college and career preparation, including references and letters of recommendation written by Rep staff

To ensure Leadership Board members are able to and will commit to the responsibilities required of them, candidates will be asked to identify potential scheduling conflicts prior being appointed.

Teen Council meets in The Rep’s Board Room twice a month, typically on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 PM. Meetings are open to both General and Leadership Board members and are used as a forum for planning events, reflecting upon recent experiences, and working through administrative tasks related to the general function of the Council. Meetings are mandatory for Leadership Board members, including elected officers.

In addition to regular meetings, the Council plans a variety of special events throughout the Season (September – May) that align with the Council’s three major tenants. Most events are planned around Rep productions and help members connect with company-wide initiatives, staff, and artists. Events also create the bulk of Council fundraising. Events include:

  • Teen Nights – Pre- and post-show Teen Night activities are student-led and have included potlucks with cast members, workshops and games, cookie decorating and ice skating, a live-action game of Clue, and more. Upcoming Teen Nights:
    A Christmas Carol  - Thursday, Dec. 8, 7:30pm
    Disgraced - Friday, Jan. 27, 8:00pm
    Grounded - Thursday, Mar. 9, 7:30pm
The Glass Menagerie - Thursday, Mar. 30, 7:30pm

Teen Council leadership board at Milwaukee Rep

“The Teen Council exec board was an amazing outlet for me to hone my leadership and theater management skills in high school. Coming into the Council, I had a strong background in theater and wanted a place to hang out with other passionate performers, but had never thought about the administrative side of theater. Anyone particularly interested in theater management won't find a better-suited pre-college opportunity in Milwaukee.”

“Teen Council has given me the opportunity to meet other teens who share my love of theatre, and to experience plays through unique Council events. It is really something special.”

“I am here to experience as much theatre as possible and because I want to do it professionally, I want to see every area possible that is available to someone in the business, and learn about it.”

“[Teen Council] was all a very positive experience the time that I've spent with it. It was great meeting new people and setting up fun events. I really found it cool how we'd get to see shows for a good price and even talk to some of the cast members! I'd definitely recommend it!”

“What Milwaukee Rep Teen Council did for me: it became like a springboard. I still have it on my resume and it really does help. I would have never been able to work at The Rep for a whole summer without it or be able to help out with the summer program. It has been such an amazing connection to have in Milwaukee and such a important part of my teen acting career I can't express how much it meant for me to be there. I also really think it showed me that there was more out there. My high school did not really teach me the skills or show me what else was out there college wise and Teen Council really helped with that.”

“Participating in Teen Council has broadened my view of future jobs I can partake in that surround theater, tuned me into more of what is going on in the theater community around me and helped me with leadership skills.”
