Latino Arts is working with 9 schools to create unique pieces of art to tell students’ personal journey stories. Birdhouses were selected as the vehicle for storytelling to represent the idea of home, settlement and migration.

Here We Make Our Home art exhibit

“When I really think about how I became the person I am, I can look back at how long that took. Every single generation of my relatives has made me into the person I am. Every ring on the tree trunk, shown like the rings of a tree’s age, has a word or phrase in a different language from a country or culture where I am from. As we go down, the phrases tell the story of the people in my family coming to America and their cultures all coming together.”  – Maggie Zale, St. Roberts School, 8th grade

“My birdhouses represent how my family’s stories were complicated and had not always a clear ending. Not all stories end up happy ever after. They came from different countries to America, hoping for a better life. To them, a better life meant being with family, making money or living in peace.”  – Zaela Johanna Schlissel, World Student Society

This grassroots photography exhibit showcases and celebrates the faces, places, and events in every ZIP Code in Milwaukee. With almost 2,000 photos to date, ZIP MKE is envisioning the Milwaukee we need to see: one that is diverse, beautiful, and proud. After a year of exhibiting at Milwaukee Public Libraries and many other venues, ZIP MKE is coming to the Quadracci Powerhouse Lobby!

Statement from Founder & Director Dominic Inouye:
“ZIP MKE is a grassroots community engagement project created in October 2016 that uses crowdsourced photography to create neighborhood pride in all parts of the city, foster community connections, expand social perspectives by diminishing preconceived assumptions, and reimagine the narrative of Milwaukee as diverse and connected, not segregated and disunited. We are excited to bring these images of the city's neighborhoods to The Rep to complement its Neighbor Series, which is a vital and intentional way of bridging the gaps we know exist.”
