Returning to the Stackner Cabaret with an all-new production, featuring more
songs and fun, ROUTE 66 is sure to be the hit of the season!
Travel along the famed “Main Street of America” with some of the
most popular songs of the road. Tickets can be purchased in person
at The Rep Ticket Office at 108 East Wells Street, or by telephone at 414-224-9490.
Tickets can also be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com.
Your 1955 road trip starts at a service station in Chicago, where you’ll
meet some men who wear “the big bright Texaco Star.” The music
continues all the way to Los Angeles, with stops in St. Louis, Amarillo, Flagstaff,
Barstow and Pasadena. You’ll hear classic car-driving songs like, Truck
Stop Cutie, Fun, Fun, Fun, King of the Road, On
the Road Again, Bring My Cadillac Back and, of course, Route
66. ROUTE 66 is a music-filled ride you don’t want
to miss!
ROUTE 66 made its world premiere on January 20, 2001 at The
Rep’s Stackner Cabaret. Since then, the show has played in many more
theaters – over 125 theaters in 32 states – and has been out on
two national tours. Writer/Director Roger Bean says it’s
just as fun as it was in 2001, “but it’s also new and improved – like
an exciting new type of laundry detergent. Well, an exciting new type of laundry
detergent that sings and dances. And drives. And clogs. And plays spoons. Come
and enjoy – you won’t be disappointed.”
Bean explains what inspired Route 66 in an article published
in the January 2001 edition of Prologue: “America has this incredible
passion for cars and traveling, and songs about our favorite set of wheels
have been roaring over the nation’s airwaves for half a century. So I
spent a few years tinkering under the hood of this ‘musical journey’ idea.
(I hope you caught the automobile reference.) Route 66 is
now more a musical review than a play: there are songs about automobiles; songs
about traveling; songs about the countryside and songs about the people who
travel this great country of ours.”
Roger Bean is the writer and director of 11 original musicals
produced by Milwaukee Repertory Theater, his most recent in the 2007/08 season
called LIFE COULD BE A DREAM. Mr. Bean’s other Rep plays include WHY
DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE? (2006/07), HONKY TONK LAUNDRY (2004/05), WINTER WONDERETTES
(2003/04), THE ANDREWS BROTHERS (2005/06), BEACH BLANKET BASH! (2001/02), ROUTE
66 (2000/01), DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL II: THE SPIN-OFF (1999/2000), DON’T
TOUCH THAT DIAL! (1997/98) and THAT’S AMORÉ (1999/2000) and THE
MARVELOUS WONDERETTES (1998/99 and 2000/01).
Mr. Bean’s musical THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES is a current Off-Broadway
hit musical, now playing at the Westside Theatre on West 43rd Street
in New York City. In addition to THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES, many of Mr. Bean’s
musicals created at The Rep – THE ANDREWS BROTHERS, WINTER WONDERETTES,
DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL!, ROUTE 66,THAT’S AMORÉ, LIFE COULD
BE A DREAM, HONKY TONK LAUNDRY and WHY
DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE? - have been produced
in various theaters across the country (Musical Theatre West, Welk Resort Theatre,
Delaware Theatre Company, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, Laguna Playhouse, Madison
Repertory Theatre, Fullerton Civic Light Opera, Phoenix Theatre, Water Tower
Theatre, Invisible Theatre and many others). In 2007, THE
MARVELOUS WONDERETTES
received the Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Musical Intimate Theatre, and
played a record-setting 18 months at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood,
CA. Mr. Bean was also nominated for two Ovation Awards for Direction of a Musical
for the Los Angeles productions of THE
MARVELOUS WONDERETTES and WINTER WONDERETTES.
Roger Bean's work as a director has been seen on the stages of the Delaware
Theatre Company, The Laguna Playhouse, Utah Shakespearean Festival, Madison
Repertory Theatre, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, Skylight Opera Theatre and numerous
stages in between. Mr. Bean recently directed the premiere of LEND ME A TENOR:
THE MUSICAL at the Utah Shakespearean Festival, written by Peter Sham and
Brad Carroll, based on the Tony-Award winning play by Ken Ludwig.
Off-stage, Mr. Bean is the Executive Director of Steele Spring Productions,
a theatrical licensing company, and is a member of the Society of Stage Directors
and Choreographers and the Dramatists Guild.
ROUTE 66 features a cast of guest actors including: Danny
Calvert, Adam Estes, Zachary Robbins and Justin Robertson. Justin Robertson
was most recently seen in LIFE COULD BE A DREAM. Adam Estes was previously
seen in The Rep’s production of THE ANDREW BROTHERS. Danny Calvert and
Zachary Robbins will be making their Rep debuts.
