Jimi Ray Malary returns to the Stackner after appearing in the
past hit shows, ELLINGTON: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF THE DUKE, JAZZ
ROYALTY and KING OF COOL: NAT KING COLE - THE LIFE, THE MAN. This
tribute features the songs that epitomize romance from three of
popular music’s most prolific and enduring songwriting teams:
Jerome Kern, Rodgers and Hart and George and Ira Gershwin. Tickets
can be purchased in person at The Rep Ticket Office at 108 East
Wells Street, or by telephone at 414-224-9490. Tickets can also
be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com.
ISN’T IT ROMANTIC . . . takes us through
the timeless songs of Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart
and George and Ira Gershwin with stories about the ups and downs
of modern love and relationships. Taking the audience through a
relationship from beginning to end – from the
first meeting to falling in love and then to falling out of love - delightful
songs illustrate the joyful as well as the tumultuous times that two individuals
go through on their journeys for romance.
With such popular songs as Isn’t It Romantic, I Could
Write a Book, Someone to Watch Over Me, My Funny Valentine and Let’s
Call the Whole Thing Off, this tribute takes
a humorous look at love in the time of text message love notes
and dates at Starbucks. As the show comes to an end, one simple
conclusion is reached about the complicated world of love and
romance: “Love may not make the world go ’round,
but it does make the ride worthwhile.”
Composer Jerome Kern has written well-known songs
including, Ol’ Man River, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat’ Man and The
Way You Look Tonight, for which he won an Academy Award. Richard
Rodgers and Lorenz Hart had a successful
partnership during the mid 1930s creating ON YOUR TOES (1936),
BABES IN ARMS (1937), THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE (1938) and PAL JOEY
(1940). George Gershwin is best known for his
composition Rhapsody In Blue as well as being half of
the famous songwriting team with his brother Ira Gershwin. The
Gershwin brothers wrote many shows for Broadway including LADY
BE GOOD and their famous opera, PORGY AND BESS.
Playwright/director David Hunter Koch explains
why he chose the music of these composers for ISN’T IT ROMANTIC
. . . : “Jerome Kern’s music has a more traditional
feel and style to it. His songs were about what romance should
be. George and Ira Gershwin wrote songs that captured the thrill
of romance and falling in love. Their music is all about the heart.
Rodgers and Hart had a different approach to love and would delve
into the heartbreak that can happen and the quirks of being in
love. Together, their songs work well guiding the path of our modern
love affair, from infatuation and romance, to disillusionment and
heartbreak, to solitude and then back to new love. There’s
a timeless quality to the journey of love that we all take which
these songs capture so well.”
David Hunter Koch returns to The Rep
after directing the Stackner Cabaret hit HULA HOOP SHA-BOOP last
season. He makes his home in Seattle, WA performing,
producing and directing theater, video and film. He created the
Cabaret de Paris, Seattle’s preeminent Cabaret theater,
where he produced and directed over 60 musical productions and
was named Seattle’s Theatrical Entrepreneur of the Year.
Koch directed singer David Byrne and guitarist Pat Metheny’s
documentary concert videos and most recently wrote and directed
the new musical MUSICA VITAE for Seattle’s Century Ballroom.
His other Milwaukee Rep directing credits also include HULA-HOOP
SHA-BOOP (07/08), ELLINGTON: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF THE DUKE (05/06),
BLUE ROSE: THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY STORY (05/06), CHAPS! (04/05),
JAZZ ROYALTY (03/04) and KING OF COOL: NAT KING COLE – THE
LIFE, THE MAN (02/03).
This will be actor/singer Jimi Ray Malary’s fourth
appearance at Milwaukee Rep. His previous credits include ELLINGTON:
THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF THE DUKE(05/06), JAZZ ROYALTY(03/04)
and KING OF COOL: NAT KING COLE - THE LIFE, THE MAN(02/03) all
of which received stellar reviews. “He [Malary] . . . has
a versatile, baritone voice with the control to whisper through
tender passages, the power to raise the roof. He connects with
the audience while crooning and maintaining . . . reserved demeanor
and elegant style,” the Journal Sentinel wrote for
his performance in KING OF COOL: NAT KING COLE - THE LIFE, THE
MAN.
Jimi Ray Malary will be accompanied by William Knowles,
who is both the music director and pianist.
A Milwaukee native, William Knowles is a graduate of Howard University
and the University of Massachusetts. He was musical director for
The Rep productions of CAROLIN’ CAROLYNNE’S COMIN’ TO
TOWN, LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR & GRILL, ELLINGTON: THE
LIFE & MUSIC OF THE DUKE, JAZZ ROYALTY, THE KING OF COOL and
DINAH WAS. He was awarded the 2001 Helen Hayes Award for Best Musical
Direction for DINAH WAS. Mr. Knowles was also nominated for the
2005 Helen Hayes Award for his work on TAMBOURINES TO GLORY.
Jimi and William will be joined by musicians Don Linke (Bass)
