Previews: January 28 and 29, 2009 Opens: January
30, 2009 Closes: February 22, 2009
A sizzling battle of the sexes catches fire in Goldoni’s
18th-century Italian farce. Single, sexy and independent Mirandolina
is mistress of her own inn and besieged by a constant stream of
suitors. Though all the men around her seem to fall madly in love
with her, will she be able to win over the one man she has her
own heart set on – a notorious woman-hater? Come watch as
the sparks fly. Tickets can be purchased in person at The
Rep Ticket Office at 108 East Wells Street or by telephone at 414-224-9490.
Tickets can also be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com.
At
an 18th-century Florentine inn, the most uncommon situation has
occurred: a young, beautiful woman has assumed the role of landlady.
The independent, flirtatious and most importantly, single, Mirandolina
finds herself the mistress of her father’s inn
after his passing six months prior. Men who stay at the inn are
instantly smitten with her, of which two of the current guests,
a count and a marquis, are no exception. “She is not like
any other woman. She’s got something more . . . her modesty
and charm. This combination is quite out of the ordinary.” The
two men shower Mirandolina with attention and gifts (each in their
own way) which she graciously accepts for fear of insulting their
kindness. The Marquis offers her his protection while the Count
spends copious amounts of money on fine jewels to bestow upon her.
Guests, however, are not the only ones charmed by their beautiful
hostess. Fabrizio, Mirandolina’s doting servant, is at her
beck and call and completely bewitched by her charms.
But Mirandolina
does not seem to be interested in any of these men. For whom does
she pine? – The Knight, a notorious woman-hater
who cannot stand to be in the same room as a woman. MIRANDOLINA
follows the scheming landlady on her quest for a husband, but when
two comic actresses arrive masquerading as ladies, Mirandolina’s
plotting does not go exactly as planned. Will she be able fend
off the advances of the other men in time to capture the heart
of the woman-hating Knight before he departs?
In a recent article,
Rep Literary Director Kristin Crouch has this to say about the
play, “MIRANDOLINA, Italian for “the
Little Miracle,” is an exceptional example of classic comedy
. . . from deep within the Age of Reason, Goldoni gives serious
consideration to the problems of the heart – who to love,
how to return love, why to love and how to show love – all
in a spirit of fun and romance!”
Playwright Carlo Goldoni was
born in Venice, Italy in 1707. He produced his first successful
comedy in 1738, THE MAN OF THE WORLD (L’UMO DI MONDO). He
continued to write plays for theaters in Venice and Paris where
he produced some of his best known work including THE LIAR (IL
BUGIARDO), PAMELA (LA PAMELA) and MIRANDOLINA (LA LOCANDIERA).
His most notable French comedy was written for the wedding of Louis
XVI and Marie Antoinette in 1771, THE BENEVOLENT CURMUDGEON, (LE
BOURRU BIENFAISANT) which enjoyed much success in France following
the occasion. Goldoni wrote over 250 works in both Italian and
French including SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS, which The Rep produced
during the 1998/99 season. He retired in Versailles where he wrote
his memoirs and received a sizable pension from the King. However
this financial resource was lost to him during the French Revolution
and Goldoni died in poverty in 1793. Goldoni is credited with reforming
the state of Italian theater by creating plays based on contemporary
life in Italy replacing commedia dell’arte (improvised
comedy), which had been popular for years. Goldoni is revered as
one of Europe’s
greatest playwrights.
