A family’s well-ordered universe comes tumbling down when they hire a maid who prefers telling jokes to cleaning in THE CLEAN HOUSE. Written by Sarah Ruhl, this beautiful and tender new comedy finds laughter and redemption in unusual places and proves how telling a good joke can be a matter of life and death. Tickets can be purchased in person at The Rep Ticket Office at 108 East Wells Street , or by telephone at 414-224-9490. Tickets can also be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com. The Rep . . . See it LIVE!
Matilde was recently hired as a live-in maid by Lane, a successful doctor who values order in every aspect of her life but hates cleaning because it makes her depressed. Matilde would rather spend her time concocting jokes in the tradition of her recently deceased parents, the funniest people in Brazil . As luck would have it, Lane’s modest sister Virginia delights in cleaning and begins to take over the maid’s duties on the sly, thus allowing Matilde time to craft the perfect joke. The plot thickens when Lane’s husband, a surgeon, unexpectedly falls in love with his patient. His soul mate, the Argentinean Ana, has all the things Lane has lost – a vital life force. In an instant everything that was clean and tidy for Lane – her house, emotions and relationships – is in disarray. Forced to pick up the pieces and closely evaluate their lives, the characters come to find an uncommon bond packed with laughter and tears as they begin to discover what living and dying is all about.
