Get those poodle skirts ready! Audiences are going to shake, rattle and roll with the return of the Stackner Cabaret’s #1 hit show of all time. Featuring over a decade of favorites, this fun-loving, sock-hopping blast from the past will be the hottest ticket in town. Tickets can be purchased in person at The Rep Ticket Office at 108 East Wells Street, or by telephone at 414-224-9490. Tickets can also be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com.

HULA HOOP SHA-BOOP follows four baby boomers’ memories of growing up in 1950s America: from whiffle balls to Barbie and demanding parents to the ever mysterious opposite sex. The days when postage went up to four cents and parents asked themselves “How are you supposed to feed a
family?” The days when “a man sitting on the passenger side of a car while a woman drives is a complete waste of maleness.” And, of course, the days of the Ken doll, “who was anatomically disappointing.” Spanning 1955 to 1962, this spectacular show is jam-packed with 65 much-loved songs. Audiences will gather around the 1950s Wurlitzer Jukebox for this stroll down memory lane. The youngsters go to their first dance and learn how to do The Mashed Potato, The Twist and The Loco-Motion. They soon grow into teenagers and ask themselves, “Who wrote the book of love?” Paul is a “Lonely Boy” while friend Johnny has his own problem with “Runaround Sue,” who reminds him that “You Don’t Own Me.” While her friend Paula becomes somebody’s “Earth Angel,” all four wonder why they must be “Teenager(s) in Love.” Who knows, maybe in the end some will end up at the “Chapel of Love.”

Milwaukee Journal
entertainment critic Tina Maples wrote in 1991, after the first production of the play, “How do you celebrate an era of clichés without resorting to them? That’s the problem posed - and solved – in HULA HOOP SHA-BOOP, Milwaukee Rep’s giddy, witty 1950s revue . . .”

Playwrights Larry Deckel, John Leicht and John Tanner wrote this amusing musical during John Leicht’s nine years as playwright-in-residence at The Rep. Premiering during the 1990/91 season, and returning during the 1992/93 season and twice again during the 1996/97 season, the musical broke records at the Stackner Cabaret and has been performed across the United States. The three writers also collaborated on the Stackner Cabaret hit PSYCHEDELIC SUNDAE.

When the show debuted, Leicht wrote “It’s not MTV and it’s not PBS. It’s HULA HOOP SHA-BOOP. Fun, lots of music and remembrance. Come and join us. See it, hear it, tap your fingers on a Cabaret table (yup, we’ve got finger dancing in the show). But mostly, enjoy.”

Director David Koch returns to The Rep after directing LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR & GRILL last season. He makes his home in Seattle, WA performing, producing and directing theater, video and film. He created the Cabaret de Paris, Seattle’s preeminent Cabaret theater, where he produced and directed over 60 musical productions and was named Seattle’s Theatrical Entrepreneur of the Year. His other Milwaukee Rep directing credits also include KING OF COOL, JAZZ ROYALTY, CHAPS! and ELLINGTON: THE LIFE & MUSIC OF THE DUKE.

Lenny Banovez (Johnny) returns to The Rep after being in last year’s Artistic Intern Company and appearing in THEY CAME FROM WAY OUT THERE at the Stackner Cabaret. The rest of the talented cast will be making their Milwaukee Rep debut. Mo Brady (Paul) performed in the 50th Anniversary production of WEST SIDE STORY in his hometown of Seattle, as well as many other regional theater productions. Kelly Kunkel (Suzie) comes to The Rep after roles in A CHORUS LINE, THE FULL MONTY, CATS and CHICAGO. Jane Noseworthy’s (Paula) acting credits include productions such as LEND ME A TENOR: THE MUSICAL, CORIOLANUS, THE TRAIN and A CHRISTMAS CAROL.
