Two thirty-something bachelors inhabit a cave-like
apartment in Madison, Wisconsin basking in a blissful state of
extended adolescence. One night, they innocently order out for
pizza, never expecting the delivery girl is the reincarnation of
a woman they both wronged in a previous lifetime. Welcome to THE
BACHELORS. Tickets can be purchased in person at The Rep Ticket
Office at 108 East Wells Street, or by telephone at 414-224
9490. Tickets can
also be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com.
THE BACHELORS is the final installment of a musical trilogy that
includes GUYS ON ICE and LUMBERJACKS IN LOVE. All three musicals
center on men who live in a state of suspended adolescence. Why
grow up when you can hang out with your buddies in a fish shanty
or lumber shanty or bachelor pad? In all three musicals, an idyllic
bachelor world is threatened by the twin evils of love and responsibility.
Fred Alley wrote the book and lyrics for THE
BACHELORS. He was co-founder and Artist in Residence at American
Folklore Theatre (AFT) in Door County, a populist theater with
a seasonal audience of 50,000. At AFT, Mr. Alley collaborated on
over 20 original shows with director Jeffrey Herbst, composer James
Kaplan, co-founder Doc Heide, designers Neen Rock and Dave Alley,
and frequent guest artists, Paul Sills and James Maronek. Last
season marked the sixth time The Rep staged GUYS ON ICE. The show
went on to a successful state-wide tour. It was performed twice
during the 1998/99 season, once during the 1999/00 and then again
during the 2000/01 season. In addition to the incredibly successful
GUYS ON ICE, Rep audiences have enjoyed LUMBERJACKS IN LOVE (1999/01)
and THE BACHELORS (2000/01), both shows written by Mr. Alley and
his musical collaborator, James Kaplan. He also collaborated with
James Valcq on THE PASSAGE and THE SPITFIRE GRILL, a production
which has played at regional theaters throughout the United States.
In May 2001, at the age of 38, Mr. Alley died unexpectedly of an
undiagnosed heart condition. His passion for laughter was an inspiration
to friends, family and those who experienced his gifted works.
THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY: A FRED ALLEY REVUE was performed in The
Rep’s Stackner Cabaret in the 2003/04 season. The revue featured
favorite pieces of music and theater from his previous work performed
at Milwaukee Rep. Mr. Alley’s productions continue to touch
the hearts of audiences everywhere.
The story for THE BACHELORS is by Mr. Alley and James
Kaplan. James Kaplan is the co-author, with Fred Alley,
of LUMBERJACKS IN LOVE, THE BACHELORS and GUYS ON ICE. He last
appeared at Milwaukee Rep in GUYS ON ICE in the Stiemke Theater
and THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY – A FRED ALLEY REVUE at the Stackner
Cabaret. He also served as Musical Director for Milwaukee Rep’s
productions of GOODNIGHT IRENE and OLD FRIENDS. James has been
creating original musicals with Door County’s American
Folklore Theatre for 15 years. His most recent AFT shows include
FISH AND WHISTLE: THE SONGS OF JOHN PRINE, LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS
and SEE JANE VOTE, created with collaborator Laurie Flanigan.
James is a member of The Dramatists Guild of America, Inc.
Jeffrey Herbst is the director for THE BACHELORS.
He made his Rep debut in 1995 as a performer in SHINE ON HARVEST
MOON. Along with GUYS ON ICE, he has directed six shows for The
Rep: LUMBERJACKS IN LOVE, OLD FRIENDS, GOODNIGHT IRENE, THE BACHELORS
and THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY. Mr. Herbst is Artistic Director
of American Folklore Theatre where he has directed numerous original
productions including BELGIANS IN HEAVEN, FISHING FOR THE MOON,
TONGUE 'N CHEEK, THE PASSAGE, NORTHERN LIGHTS and PACKER FANS FROM
OUTER SPACE. He
is the creator of BONE DANCE: A CARNIVAL OF GHOST TALES and FOOL
ME ONCE.
The Guest Actors in THE BACHELORS include Steven
M. Koehler (Stew), Doug
Mancheski (John) and Katherine Strohmaier (Kate). James
Kaplan also appears as the Piano Player.
