The disappearance of a ten-year-old girl brings three people together for a journey into the mysteries of human behavior and the limits of forgiveness. One of the most shattering and unforgettable plays of recent years finds hope in the most tragic of circumstances. Please note:This production contains adult language and situations. Tickets can be purchased in person at The Rep Ticket Office at 108 East Wells Street, or by telephone at 414-224-9490. Tickets can also be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com.
Set in modern-day England, FROZEN tells the story about three strangers – a mother, a disturbed drifter and a psychiatric researcher – who are brought together through the death of a young girl. The mother, Nancy, struggles to let go of years of sorrow of hoping for her daughter’s return. The psychiatrist, Agnetha, explores the haunting inner workings of a killer’s mind and tries to explain his criminal behavior. The serial killer, Ralph, seems remorseless for his crimes and completely unaware of the effects of his actions on others. FROZEN raises profound questions on love, loss and the nature of forgiveness. How does a mother deal with the loss of a daughter? How does a killer deal with their actions? What is the nature of evil? Is it possible to forgive the unforgivable?
Playwright Bryony Lavery’s plays include FROZEN, BAG, ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES, WITCHCRAZE, WICKED KITCHEN MATTERS, NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU, OPHELIA, A WEDDING STORY and the award-winning HER ACHING HEART. Her plays for young people include MORE LIGHT and ILLYRIA . Her extensive work for BBC Radio includes NO JOAN OF ARC, VELMA AND THERESE, THE SMELL OF HIM, REQUIEM and adaptations of WUTHERING HEIGHTS, HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA and LADY AUDLEY’S SECRET for the Classic Serial. She has adapted BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE MUSEUM for York Theatre Royal and Angela Carter’s THE MAGIC TOYSHOP for Shared Experience. She is an honorary Doctor of Arts at De Montfort University. FROZEN was the TMA Best Play Award 1998 and the Eileen Anderson Central Television Award for Best Play in 1998. It was a hit in both London and New York, and was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize, and was nominated for five Tony Awards, including best new play. She has just completed her first screenplay FROZEN marks director Kate Buckley’s debut with Milwaukee Repertory Theater. She is a founding member of Chicago Shakespeare Theater and four-year Artistic Director of The Next Theatre and has been a Guest Lecturer on Shakespeare at universities and arts organizations nationally and abroad. Kate Buckley recently commented on the play: “FROZEN is a play that will make you think. It’s not an easy play. It is dark, disturbing and upsetting on many levels, but I would be remiss if I didn’t say that it is also about human resiliency, our capacity to go on living while experiencing so much pain. It is a play that tackles big questions. It is a play that should be presented.”
Included in the cast of FROZEN are Resident Acting Company Members: Jonathan Gillard Daly (Voice of David); Lee E. Ernst (Ralph); Laura Gordon (Agnetha); and Deborah Staples (Nancy).
