All seems solid as bedrock at Voysey and Son, the respected family brokerage house in all-too-comfortable 1930’s London. But an unexpected event reveals a scandalous secret and the son must decide between loyalty to his family and his own sense of justice. Don’t miss this classic drama that could have been ripped from today’s financial headlines. Tickets can be purchased in person at The Rep Ticket Office at 108 East Wells Street, or by telephone at 414-224-9490. Tickets can also be purchased online 24/7 at milwaukeerep.com.

THE VOYSEY INHERITANCE is a play set in 1930’s London that explores the financial consequences of Mr. Voysey’s scandal and familial relationships in light of the corruption. The play opens in the office of Voysey and Son. Edward, partner and heir of his father’s firm, is let in on the family secret. Mr. Voysey has been dipping into client’s accounts to furnish his own profit, a secret that has been going on for generations. His son, Edward, being a man of principle, is shocked and unnerved at the corruption that has been going on undiscovered for so long. Edward is forced to clean up his father’s mess. But to do so, he must keep the sham afloat. With the inevitable death of his father, Edward reveals the truth to his, mostly uninformed, family. Edward promises that he will reverse the fraud and give back all the money to the people his father had stolen from. But when Mr. Booth, long-time friend of Mr. Voysey and one of the company’s biggest clients, requests his money back soon after the funeral, Edward is put into danger of being found out by his clients and being thrown into jail. The line dividing black and white becomes gray, leaving Edward in a moral and ethical struggle with his family and business.

Playwright Harley Granville-Barker was born in London, England on November 25, 1877. Not having attended a university or any form of consistent schooling, Granville-Barker dedicated himself to the theater, never limiting himself to one role; he was an actor, director, producer-manager, critic and playwright. Although he was a brilliant playwright, Granville-Barker proved to be ahead of his time – his works were too progressive and controversial for audiences at the time. In his 20s, Granville-Barker became established as a leader of the movement to reform British theater. The goal was to make theater less about spectacle and escapism and transform it into the cradle of a New Drama that explored social issues and featured naturalistic staging and realistic psychology. As testament to Granville-Barker’s progressive style, the Royal Shakespeare Company has produced THE MARRYING OF ANNE LEETE (1975) and WASTE (1985, with Judi Dench). National Theatre productions have included THE MADRAS HOUSE in 1976 and THE VOYSEY INHERITANCE in 1989, adapted and directed by Richard Eyre. THE VOYSEY INHERITANCE has also been produced for British television (1979), and the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario staged seven Granville-Barker productions between 1988 and 2002.

Director Sanford Robbins returns to the Milwaukee Rep after directing last season’s wildly successful Stiemke Theater production BAD DATES. Previous productions for Milwaukee Repertory Theater include TRUE WEST, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, STARK MAD IN WHITE SATIN and THE BIRTHDAY PARTY. Theaters for which he has directed include Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Alley Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. He has directed the international premieres of several Sam Shepard plays, including BURIED CHILD at both the Moscow Arts Theatre Studio and the National Theatre of Cyprus. His production of Shepard’s THE TOOTH OF CRIME at Finland’s Kuopio Theatre received the Thalia Award for Best production in Finland. He is the founder and Director of the Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP) – ranked as one of the top ten theater programs in America – which began at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is now located at the University of Delaware. (Rep Resident Actors Mark Corkins, Lee E. Ernst, and Torrey Hanson are all graduates of the PTTP program.) In addition to his work in the theater, he leads programs for Landmark Education.

Director Sanford Robbins recently stated that, “It is always an honor and a privilege to work with The Rep’s Resident Acting Company, one of the finest in the country. Milwaukee is extremely fortunate to have a theater that has made a commitment to supporting a resident acting company. It shows in the work that is produced here. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to direct this group of actors in VOYSEY INHERITANCE, a large ensemble piece, which will greatly benefit from the depth and experience these actors bring to the work.”
